Search Engine Optimisation Process: Keyword Research

There are three phases to any SEO campaign - phase one involves identifying the correct keywords to optimise for, phase two relates to the content, coding and structure of the pages of your website and phase three involves the building of links on external websites to your site.

Keyword research

We begin any SEO campaign by first identifying which keywords you should be targeting first. There are many factors that will determine this - including the volume of searches conducted each month for those terms - and the ferocity of the competition in the search rankings for those phrases.

Proper keyword research helps to pinpoint the most valuable phrases and variations to optimise for. For instance, if you run a bike shop, you might hope to target the search term "bike shops". However, using keyword-research tools that provide insights in to Google's search usage, we may discover that "cycle shops" actually receives more searches per month - and is the better phrase to optimise your site for.

It's also important to bear in mind the competition in the search results. Trying to optimise your site for very popular, broad terms is likely to pitch you against big, established global brands. You may dream of a page-1 listing for "books" for instance, but you'll find yourself competing with Amazon, Waterstones, Tesco et al, so need to find a more realistic term - but one which will still deliver valuable levels of visitors to your site.

That's not to say, of course, that premium keywords and phrases are unattainable. With the right focus and approach, it's feasible to top the rankings for the most competitive and popular global terms. Take a look at the examples we've achieved on the right for terms like "garden roses", "water softeners", "antique coins", etc.

Our SEO campaign management takes the guesswork out of optimising your website for top-performance in the search-engines. Be sure to drive only the most-relevant traffic to your website, with high-performing keywords and phrases, while spending your budget wisely and effectively.
