PCI DSS is the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard - a set of technical and operational regulations established in September 2006 for business that are involved in card payment transactions.
Any company involved with the storage, processing or transmission of payment card-holder data must certify that they are PCI DSS compliant. Most banks now require merchants to be PCI DSS compliant if they sell products online. If an e-commerce website, which is not compliant, is compromised, some card-processing companies issue fines in excess of £10,000.
