Web Application Developer (Coldfusion)
The company:
Advantec Internet Services Ltd is a specialist web development and programming agency based near Southampton, Hampshire. We provide a range of web development, design, marketing and programming services to a variety of clients - from small local businesses up to multi-national corporations. Our typical projects can range from building a simple 10-page content-managed brochure website, to providing a large-scale, integrated online accounting system. We also provide extensive e-commerce services - including the design, build and marketing of online retail sites, which often include features such as integration with offline stock-control systems. Our web applications and development projects are generally built using ColdFusion - but we have significant involvement with Classic and .Net ASP sites.
The software platform used for our e-commerce websites uses both classic and .Net ASP. The majority of our websites and projects run on Microsoft SQL Server databases. Advantec is a relatively small web development agency - but as a result of several high-profile contract wins, is currently expanding with the recruitment of several new positions - including this Coldfusion Web Application Developer role.
Purpose of the Role:
This position is an important and pivotal one within the company. The majority of our business is now related to the development and support of complex web applications - and the Web Application Developer will take lead responsibility for this vital area of our business. The Web Application Developer is involved with some of our key projects - from working on initial client briefs and proposals - to building, implementing and testing custom web application solutions tailored to each individual client. The Developer will report directly to the Managing Director - and will often attend project scoping meetings with clients - assisting the Director in the production of client proposals and functional specifications.
Furthermore, the Developer will plan and develop web applications, which closely follow these specifications - working alongside our design and project management staff to create world-class web applications that fulfil a very wide variety of client needs. The Developer will build these applications using ColdFusion - probably within a framework of their choosing (e.g. Coldspring, Fusebox, ModelGlue, etc). Applications will generally be developed using Microsoft SQL Server databases on Windows hosting environments.
Also of key importance is an exceptional level of competence across the full spectrum of technologies used by a web development agency of this nature. The Web Application Developer will be the lead technical employee within the company - and will be expected to take the lead in employing new and emerging technologies - both within the ColdFusion environment - but also within the wider area of web development in general.
The Web Application Developer will be responsible for maintaining the technical integrity of all existing web applications, systems and servers within the company - and will be able to support, maintain, develop and improve our existing hosting architecture - including the administration of SQL Server and Windows 2003 and 2008 web servers. It is also the Web Application Developer's responsibility to ensure all coding is standardised and clearly documented.
Experience Required:
The Web Application Developer will have had several years of experience developing complex web applications - probably - but not essentially - within a web agency environment. Approximately 5-years experience is ideal - but more important is the ability to show a proven track-record of successful, live websites and applications that match the kind of projects we deliver for our clients.
Skills and Expertise Required:
- Extensive working knowledge and experience of Adobe Coldfusion
- A full and complete knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and SQL scripting
- A complete understanding of HTML/CSS - and how the applications developed integrate with the 'front end' elements of such a project
- Preferably some experience and/or understanding of Classic and .Net ASP and also PHP
- In addition to full competence with Microsoft SQL Server, an understanding of the workings of MySQL would also be beneficial
Personal / Professional Characteristics Required:
This role will require significant client interaction - including direct liaison with clients by email, telephone and in face-to-face meetings. A mature, professional attitude is therefore required - and good written and verbal communication skills are essential. A general dedication - both inside and outside of work - to web development and technology - and a passion for the use of the internet and IT to streamline and improve people's business and personal lives - would be a great advantage.
Salary and benefits:
Advantec is a relatively small business - and the Web Application Developer holds a position of responsibility - being integral to the companies' overall performance. Rather than simply being a cog within a larger team, this role directly impacts the future success of the company - and the holder of this position has direct influence of the future direction of the business. There are clear routes for career progression - as the team expands, the Web Application Developer is likely to be elevated to a senior role directly supervising junior developers - with ultimate progression to a Technical Director role.
Being a modern and progressive company, we promote flexible working - including opportunities to work from home and flexi-time hours. There are 25-days holiday per year.
The salary is negotiable depending on experience, but is expected to be within the range of £30,000 to £40,000 per year. We operate a bonus scheme, whereby if company sales targets are achieved, an annual bonus of 5% of salary is awarded to staff each year.
